Chain Link vs. Mesh: Which Pickleball Fence Should You Choose?

· · 2 min read

Rusty chain-link fence around a pickleball court

Most pickleball courts in the Northeast are still fenced with chain link because that is what the fence company down the road sells. It works, in the sense that it stops balls. Here is where it falls short and where mesh pulls ahead.

Visibility

Chain link diamonds are a busy pattern that the eye cannot ignore, and adding a windscreen turns the court into a box. The Pickleball Fence is a low barrier with a fine-weave mesh that reads nearly transparent from a few feet away. From a patio or clubhouse you watch the match, not the fence.

Wind

Bare chain link does nothing for wind. Chain link with a windscreen does too much: it becomes a sail that loads the posts in every storm. Mesh cuts wind by up to 30% while staying air-permeable, which is the balance players actually want.

Rust, sag and maintenance

Galvanized chain link rusts at the cut ends and ties first, then everywhere. Top rails sag, fabric stretches, and balls wedge in the diamonds. The mesh is fade-resistant and will not rot, warp or mildew, the poles are solid-core rather than hollow tube, and there is nothing to repaint. Occasional cleaning is all the maintenance it needs.

Safety

Chain link has twisted wire ends at the top and sharp edges wherever it was cut. Mesh poles have inset caps and recessed screws, and the auto-locking gates close and latch themselves.

Resurfacing

Every court needs resurfacing eventually. With chain link the contractor works around the posts or you pay to cut the fence out and re-install. With mesh you lift the sections out, cap the sleeves, and put the fence back when the surface cures.

Cost

Bare chain link is the cheapest first quote. Mesh usually lands below vinyl-coated chain link with a windscreen, and over ten years of no painting, no repairs and no fence removal for resurfacing it is typically the lower total cost.
